Throat Chakra – the centre of physical and spiritual purification

No one means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is viscous.

Throat Chakra - Yoga

Vishuddhi Chakra

Visha = impurity, poison Shuddhi = purification

The Throat Chakra governs the aspects of expressing and receiving. Expressing can be in the form of communicating what one wants and what one feels, or it can be an artistic expression, as an artist painting, a dancer dancing, a musician playing music, using a form for expressing and bringing to the outside what was within. This Chakra is a great source of balance as we often receive what we express – it is reflected back to us. Is could be as simple as being able to ask what you want or need, being able to ask for help, or being able to express your own desires. Very often, we are unsure of what we need or want, and this is where the Throat Chakra comes in to play – when balanced, it allows us to hear our inner voice, and to be able to act on our intuition (developing the skills of understanding ourselves first and foremost).

Metaphysically, this chakra is related to creativity, creating, manifesting in the physical world the fulfillment of one’s goals.

When this chakra is unbalanced:

If the throat chakra is out of balance, it can manifest in problems with decision making or personal expression, feeling unable to express yourself creatively, fear of speaking (or excessive speaking), the inability to listen, being critical or being dishonest.

Balance your Throat Chakra

  • Sing (use mantras in your meditation)
  • Listen to uplifting music, or play a musical instrument
  • Incorporate yoga poses that open your Throat Chakra (camel, wheel, fish, plow pose)
  • Watch your diet – opt in for healthy snacks, soups, juices – anything that nourishes your body, and lubricates your throat.
